Hippo Pool Party
Summer is the perfect time for water sports, and Devi the African river hippo calf is ready for a serious game of in-the-pool peekaboo! Her underwater antics are keeping San Diego Zoo visitors happy and Funani, Devi's protective mom, busy, as she tries to keep tabs on her rambunctious youngster. Come on by—the water’s fine!
Say ‘Hello’ to Antiki!
It’s a girl! The Condor Cam’s newest star is female and the not-so-little lady’s name is Antiki, which is a Chumash word meaning “to recover” or “get well.” Antiki is the 17th chick produced by parents Sisquoc and Shatash, and the 7th they have raised themselves. Her older siblings include familiar faces Saticoy and Cuyamaca, who are now winging free in the skies over Southern California and Arizona, respectively.
RISE of the Jack O’Lanterns at the Safari Park
Coming soon to the Safari Park… it’s the RISE of the Jack O’Lanterns! This unique, family-friendly, Halloween-themed event will take place outdoors on select dates and times in the Safari Park's parking lot. Take a walk along the 1/3-mile trail to discover 5,000 hand-carved, illuminated jack o'lanterns arranged in artful displays representing celebrities, sports teams, classic cars, dinosaurs, and of course, zoo animals! This festive event takes place in the evening and requires an advance online ticket purchase from The RISE website for a pre-selected date/time. No day-of or on-site ticket sales. All ticket sales are through The RISE website only (the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park are not selling tickets to this event).
Tickets go on sale as of August 1 to the general public. San Diego Zoo Global Members can pre-purchase their tickets now using a special URL (see the July issue of ZOONOOZ).
Listen Up—It's Nighttime Fun at the Zoo!
Follow the music—and sounds of summer fun—to the San Diego Zoo’s Nighttime Zoo presented by Cymer, through September 7! “Shake, Rattle, and Roar” is the theme of this year’s extravaganza, and you’ll want to dance along to the Alley Cats, Rock and Roar, the Chameleons, and other exciting performers as the Zoo keeps hopping until 9 p.m. nightly. Albert’s Restaurant will offer its “Happy Happens” happy hour specials from 3 to 5 p.m. daily (through September 7), and “Earth Rhythms,” a music, light, and video experience, awaits in Wegeforth Bowl to end your evening on a perfect note. Come shake your tail feathers!
Brewmaster Dinner at the Safari Park
Saint Archer Brewing Company will present selected beers to accompany a four-course gourmet meal on Saturday, July 11, in Hunte Nairobi Pavilion. Summer Safari at the Park
Music, shows, and exciting entertainment are all a part of the Safari Park’s Summer Safari Asian Celebration, running through August 16. From acrobats and martial arts performers to animal encounters and our amazing Sumatran tigers, Summer Safari will celebrate the wonders of the mystical Far East. With the Park open until 7 p.m. daily, you have time to take an evening tram ride, and still prowl to your heart’s content!
