Lucky Little Lucas

A keeper feeds 12-day old Lucas. Watch Video.

A little miracle happened at the Safari Park last month—and his name is Lucas. The Rodrigues fruit bat pup was born last month via an emergency C-section (the first ever for the species) at the Paul Harter Veterinary Medical Center. Unfortunately, Patty, his mother, did not survive, but the tough little youngster is thriving, thanks to the TLC being provided by animal care staff. The precocious pup is even flying early! Lucas is the second Rodrigues fruit bat ever to be hand raised at the Park (his mom was the first), and he will eventually be introduced to the rest of the bat colony when he is old enough. Visitors will be able to see him soon. Stay tuned: same bat time, same bat channel!
