I think you should name the baby Star Bright, when I saw the little kids watching the moniter at the viewing area, they kind of got a smile on their faces as bright as a star…. I think you should name it after something it does to people when they see it..

Our darling panda’s naming event is coming verrrry sooon. I feel the thrill. I feel the tension.
I think there is a great debate whether to call the cub a “BRIGHT STAR” or “CHERISHED TREASURE.”
I go for any of the names as long as they SOUND GOOD both in English and Chinese.

I researched on “Bright Star” Chinese names: Check these out:
珍珍 zhen zhen /precious thing / treasure
明月 ming yue /bright moon / refers to 夜明珠, a legendary pearl that can glow in the dark
明媚 ming mei /bright and beautiful
明星 ming xing /star / celebrity
星星 xing xing /star in the sky

暐 wei /the bright shining of the sun
龑 yan /high and bright

One other question: I just read that Bai Yun is on a 12-year loan. Does that mean she will have to go back in 2008? Might there be any consideration given to the fact the she and Gao Gao are so successful in breeding together?

I have been wondering something about the panda breeding program as a whole. Obviously, it’s a very good thing that all of these amazing animals are thriving in captivity, and that, if this progress continues, they will no longer be endangered. It seems, though, that these captive pandas have a great deal of human interaction and training. Is there a later phase of the program, where pandas will be bred, raised with less human interaction, and released into the wild? Is that even possible? Hooray for a thriving panda population, wherever it may be, but when I look at the photos of leafy green Wolong, I always imagine what it would look like with wild pandas loafing in those trees and playing in the water!

For the time being, I am SO happy to be able to view and visit these guys! From the first time I saaw baby Hua Mei, I was hopelessly smitten. I was speechless this summer when I got to see Su Lin and Mei Sheng in person.

Thanks so very much for providing us such a high level of access and information! My daily cyber-visits to the pandas are always a bright spot in my day!

I’ve been reading the comments on the names for the baby cub. What does Bright Star translate to in Chinese?
I like that name also. I have been watching the baby cub since birth. I never thought I would get so attached to this baby cub to check on her every day, and throughout the day. I am looking forward to hearing what the baby cub is named. Thank you for allowing everyone to view this experience on your Panda Cam.

I live out-of-state and cannot visit the zoo in order to suggest a name for the baby panda, but I would love to see her called “Precious Gift” because that is what she, and all of the animals are. I don’t have a clue as to what that translates into!
