Run, Cheetah, Run!

What a thrill to be with the first group of people to witness the Wild Animal Park’s new Cheetah Run Safari program! The program officially opens to the public April 2, but the cheetah and his trainers needed to practice before a “live audience” of very willing employees.
An open caravan truck took us to the newly constructed Cheetah Outpost, a grassy area with three large tents: one for tables and chairs for light refreshments, one for the porta-potties, and one for Majani the cheetah and the other critters that are a part of this adventure. Since this was a “dry” run, no refreshments were provided—sigh!
The Cheetah Run Safari program aims to highlight amazing African animals and their unique skills. A caracal named Kasten showed off his hunting prowess. Caracals are small cats with big attitudes. While safely on a long lead, he stalked a toy attached to a flexible pole held by a trainer. It was awesome to see Kasten suddenly leap up, twist his body just so, and snag that toy in midair (see photo above)!
We then lined up along the edge of the cheetah “racetrack.” As a warm-up to the main event, Majani’s dog companion, Clifford, raced after the mechanical lure first. I was impressed by Clifford’s speed and enthusiasm as he charged after that alluring “rabbit.” Then it was Majani’s turn. He too dashed after the moving prey, totally ignoring us as he sped by. How often does one get to see a cheetah run close by in one’s lifetime? In this case, two times! While Majani rested before his next run, a peregrine falcon named Java gave a flying demonstration. She soared and dove right over our heads as she attempted—and succeeded—to bring down a lure. What a wonderful sight!
After Majani’s second run down the track, he (with his trainer, of course!) came back to rest on the road while we admired him up close. He looked so pleased with himself as he stretched out in the shade. Soon we heard a raspy rumble—Majani was purring contentedly—a perfect end to an exciting and unique experience!
