New Frontier for Tiger Cubs!
Posted at 1:16 pm March 7, 2007 by Marcia ReddingOur litter of Sumatran tiger cubs, now 2 1/2 months old, is quickly acclimating to the great outdoors (see Marcia's previous blog, Tiger Cubs Expand Their World). Yesterday, they were allowed access to the largest of our off-exhibit exercise yards. This particular area contains rocky slopes, a shallow pool, bamboo, and even a cave. After adding a couple of big bones to the yard, we released Delta and her family into the yard. We provided access into the den area from the yard in case anybody was intimidated and needed a time out.
All three cubs followed mom out right away. For a few minutes they stayed close to the release door, but soon set out to explore. When the male cub spotted the bones, he pounced on one and attempted to drag it inside to chew. However, the bone was nearly as big as he was! First he tried to drag it between his front legs; not much success there, he kept tripping. Finally he grabbed the bone, turned around, and dragged it backwards into the release alley. His curiosity got the best of him, however, and soon he was back outside with his sisters and mom.
The huge ravens in the area were a bit of a surprise; the drinker also received lots of interest. Delta was happy to get outside too, and checked out all her favorite resting places.
This adventure was a big step towards the day when the cubs will be able to go on exhibit. It shouldn't be too long now!

Thanks, Marcia. Sounds like they are growing and maturing nicely. They should be well prepared for their grand debut on the " official" exhibit. Wish we could see them on a web cam, but photos are great too.
