Intern Marika’s Profile

marikaprofile_-1.jpgMy cocker spaniel, Buddy, is my best friend. Some people think I’m weird, but that’s just who I am. I’m an animal lover. My parents give me the strangest looks when they hear me talking to my dog. I’m always being asked what I want to be when I grow up and I confidently give people my answer, “A zoologist.” As a high school student in Santee, I’ve taken many classes to pursue this dream. My favorite class is biology, with my amazing teacher, Mrs. Rhiane Purdy.  My name is Marika and I’m a future employee of the San Diego Zoo (at least that is my hope). I have just begun my work as an intern at the Zoo and I am looking forward to learning a lot about animals.

I am definitely a family person and anytime I get the chance, I love to spend time at home. My family gives me lots of love and they motivate me to do well in everything that I put my mind to. My mom is wonderful and I love her very much. She helps me a lot when it comes to school. My dad is also a great person. He is always there to help me with things. He’s my sideline coach when I’m playing sports. Then there’s my brother; he may be a pain sometimes but what brother isn’t? We get along well and he is very entertaining. I love my family!

Other than working with animals, sports are my next favorite pastime. I used to play a lot of different sports, such as soccer, softball, and cheerleading, but now I am currently involved in golf and basketball. I have been playing basketball for six years. Not only do I enjoy playing it, but I also love to watch it. The Pistons are my all-time favorite NBA team. I’ve been involved in golf for two years at my school and I am ranked number 2. I don’t like to watch it that much, but when I do, I’m always cheering for Tiger Woods.

Friendship is another key point in my life. Without friends, life would be pretty tough. I have the best friends any girl could ask for. It might sound silly, but my little group of friends and I have a club called “The Lucky Seven”. They are terrific!

I hope that ten years from now, the other six of The Lucky Seven will find me hard at work as a zoologist, working with animals, living my dream!

I am on the Zoo InternQuest Conservation Team.

Thanks, Marika, for introducing yourself. Best wishes on pursuing your dream to work with animals as a zoologist. The animals will be lucky and grateful to have such a dedicated animal lover to work with them and help conserve their species and their habitat. When I visit the San Diego Zoo in a few years, I hope I will come across you, or at least your name somewhere at the zoo.

think talking to a dog is weird? Well I talk to my pet goldfish

  3. Margaret in VA says:

Fatima, does your goldfish talk back like my dogs do?

One of my dogs either whimpers a response or barks very loudly at me to be sure I heard his answer to my questions. Sometimes he comes over and starts having a “conversation” with me complete with different tones and inflections.
