Conserving Ursids: Polar Bears

Posted at 8:53 pm May 4, 2008 by Megan Owen

polar bearsAny day of the week, you will find visitors to the San Diego Zoo at Polar Bear Plunge watching every move Kalluk, Chinook, or Tatqiq make. Sometimes it may be something as simple as a yawn, stretch, or roll during an afternoon nap. But other times, visitors are rapt with attention while watching our bears wrestle with each other underwater, play with any number of enrichment items, or making eye contact and interacting through the glass with them. There is just something about polar bears that captures the imagination and attention of people of all ages.

Bear Awareness Days, May 8 to 11

Posted at 9:38 am May 1, 2008 by Pamela Crowe

Zhen in snowIt’s time to celebrate bears! The San Diego Zoo’s annual Bear Awareness Days event will be held this year from May 8 to 11. If you’re not familiar with this event, it’s a fun way for us to bring awareness to our guests about bears and their conservation needs. We are extremely lucky here at the San Diego Zoo to have 5 of the 8 bear species in our collection, and we invite you to learn more about them by joining us for bear talks and other bear activities that we have scheduled for this year’s event. (See schedule here…)

Dining with Polar Bears

Chinook and Kalluk
Chinook, left, and Kalluk

Many people ask me, “What do you feed the bears?” and “How do you keep polar bears in San Diego?” What they don’t realize is that the answers are closely related. Polar bears in the wild rely on the sea ice to hunt their main prey, ringed seals; because of this, their hunting season lasts only six to eight months each year. It’s the fat stores they build up from eating these seals that give them energy throughout the year.

Love Lost at Polars?

Posted at 3:56 pm April 7, 2008 by Kelly Murphy

So things here at Polar Bear Plunge at the San Diego Zoo still seem to be at a stand still. We are continuing our management the same by rotating the different pairs of bears, but have not seen any further progression between Chinook and Kalluk. I’m not sure that we’ll hear the pitter patter of little paws after all.

Polar Bears: Is It the Perfume?

Posted at 9:56 am April 1, 2008 by Megan Owen

polar bearsSpring is here, and along with the fair weather and blooming flowers come varied behavioral displays of courtship and breeding for many animal species. In the Arctic, you’d distinguish spring primarily by the increased day length, because it is still cold in the far north, and polar bears are roaming all over the sea ice in search of food and, for some, mates.

Polar Bears Sense Environmental Changes

Posted at 11:34 am March 21, 2008 by Megan Owen

Each week, numerous news stories highlight the changes in the Arctic habitat initiated by global climate change. Typically, reports emphasize the rapid and dramatic changes that are occurring in this once remote part of our planet. Often, the reports discuss the impact of these changes on polar bears. I think we can all agree that it is hard to imagine an Arctic without polar bears. It is also clear that as the Arctic ecosystem changes rapidly, the potential impact on polar bears from other human activities is amplified.

Painting Polar Bears

Posted at 9:34 am March 19, 2008 by Kelly Murphy

polar paw printAt first glance, you might think this blog is about people who paint pictures of polar bears at the San Diego Zoo. What you will soon discover is that it’s really about us painting our polar bears and then letting them try their hand, or rather paw, at creating a masterpiece of their own. Yes, I’m talking about our polar bear paw prints. All three of our bears have had an opportunity to participate in art class, but I must say that Chinook is our star student.

Creatures Great and Small

polar bear ChinookI have recently begun watching Chinook (pictured) and Kalluk as a part of a team of researchers conducting a breeding study on polar bears at Polar Bear Plunge at the San Diego Zoo. One day each week I observe this male-female pair as they come out on exhibit in the morning, recording their behavior and looking for signs of estrus-related behavior from them. It has been a while since I had the pleasure of routinely watching polar bears. The last time I participated in research on this species it was when our polar bear family included individuals with names like Buzz, Neil, Bonnie, and Castor… and if those names are familiar to you, then you know how long ago that study effort was!

Pool Play at the Plunge

Posted at 10:09 am March 10, 2008 by Kelly Murphy

polar bear KallukLast Saturday was All About Enrichment weekend at the San Diego Zoo, and I was hoping to give the polar bears a special treat. That way, they and our guests would enjoy themselves. One of the “specialty” items they’ve loved in the past are the 4-foot diameter plastic kiddie pools, the brighter the color the better, so I found a blue one and a purple one.

Polar Bear Update

Posted at 10:20 am March 5, 2008 by Kelly Murphy

polar bear TatqiqIt was brought to my attention last week that the Polar Cam had been experiencing some problems. With that came some frustration from our loyal viewers who were not able to watch the bears up to their usual antics. So I thought I’d write to let you all know that things are fairly status quo here at Polar Bear Plunge at the San Diego Zoo. (Read Kelly’s previous bear blog, A Good Day for Polar Bears.)
