Vaccinations for Meerkat Pups

Posted at 12:41 pm May 9, 2008 by Laura Weiner

4 meerkat pupsOur little meerkat pups are growing by leaps and bounds every day (see Laura’s previous blog, Crowd-pleasing Meerkat Pups). Last week was their first set of vaccines, which always proves to be fun. The meerkats don’t seem to agree! I have been training everyone to come into the back keeper service area so they are easy to catch. Every day I wait for them all to come into the back for their meatballs. They are all very enthusiastic about eating and will follow me basically anywhere. Getting the four pups all back there at the same time can be challenging. Three run in, one is scared and stays right outside the door. Then one will run out and that fourth one will run in. It’s like they planned it!

Ivan giraffeIn the short history of the Wild Animal Park, there are only a few animals that have achieved legendary status for both employees and guests alike. Grizzly Paw Prints to be Auctioned!

Posted at 2:41 pm May 1, 2008 by Hali Anderson

Montana's paw printWe will be celebrating Bear Awareness Days at the San Diego Zoo May 8 through 11 (see blog about Bear Awareness Days…). This is a wonderful opportunity for you to visit the five bear species we house at the Zoo and hopefully take home some knowledge of their importance to the planet and what can be done to help save them from extinction. Our goal is to raise awareness about the bears of the world and to raise money to send to several bear conservation groups. One of our fund-raising efforts comes in the form of an online auction, where you will be able to bid on some one-of-a-kind items courtesy of the bears and their creative caretakers!

A Gibbon Birthday Party

Posted at 11:00 am April 29, 2008 by Beth McDonald

gibbon partyOn April 4, we celebrated Bodhi’s 2nd birthday. Bodhi is one of four red-cheeked gibbons (formerly known as Gabriella’s crested gibbons) located in Sun Bear Forest at the San Diego Zoo. Bodhi, mom CJ, dad Max, and Aunt Gaby all had a great time at the party! There were boxes filled with hay and other goodies, which were Max’s favorites, along with a three-layer piñata cake.gibbon party

gibbon partyCJ carried around a party hat with a touch of honey on the inside. She collected the birthday cups, which we had filled with popcorn, while Gaby enjoyed the party-themed treat bags; she held them with her feet so she could pick through the shredded paper with her fingers to find the peanuts.

gibbon partyBirthday boy Bodhi was having a blast swinging from tree to tree, playing with all the party streamers. The celebration was not only enriching for the gibbon family, but for the keepers as well. We loved creating this very special day for them!

Now he has returned to us and we are so excited to have him!

Tiger Cubs Find a New Home

Posted at 11:09 am April 2, 2008 by Kym Nelson

tigersThe Wild Animal Park’s Sumatran tiger siblings Kemala, Rojo, and Sari headed out March 31 on their journey to a new home at the Topeka Zoo in Kansas. These tiger “cubs” are now almost 16 months old and the term “cub” really is no longer justified (see previous blog, Tiger Cubs Are Growing Up!). These cats have earned the description of subadults; their last weights, taken on March 25, showed Kemala at 169 pounds (76.8 kilograms), Sari at 175 pounds (79.5 kilograms), and Rojo at a whopping 205 pounds (93.2 kilograms)! To put these weights in perspective, mom Delta weighs 188 pounds (85.5 kilograms) and dad Utan weighs 290 pounds (131.4 kilograms). So, as you can tell, they are growing fast!

Crowd-pleasing Meerkat Pups

Posted at 4:05 pm March 27, 2008 by Laura Weiner

The meerkat exhibit on Elephant Mesa at the San Diego Zoo has been very popular as of late. No doubt mostly because of the four meerkats pups that have been drawing crowds. The pups, born on February 21, 2008, just reached five weeks old and are doing great.
