Tiger Cubs at the Zoo!

Posted at 3:20 pm May 14, 2008 by Rochelle Willison

3 tiger cubsWe have three new additions to Tiger River at the San Diego Zoo! At 6 a.m. on April 29, keepers discovered that Mek, our ten-year-old Malayan tiger, had given birth to three cubs. She had been on birth watch since April 24, and her behavior was somewhat different on the 28th but, as is often the case, she waited until we went home to give birth.

Vaccinations for Meerkat Pups

Posted at 12:41 pm May 9, 2008 by Laura Weiner

4 meerkat pupsOur little meerkat pups are growing by leaps and bounds every day (see Laura’s previous blog, Crowd-pleasing Meerkat Pups). Last week was their first set of vaccines, which always proves to be fun. The meerkats don’t seem to agree! I have been training everyone to come into the back keeper service area so they are easy to catch. Every day I wait for them all to come into the back for their meatballs. They are all very enthusiastic about eating and will follow me basically anywhere. Getting the four pups all back there at the same time can be challenging. Three run in, one is scared and stays right outside the door. Then one will run out and that fourth one will run in. It’s like they planned it!

It’s breeding season here at the Maui Bird Conservation Center (MBCC), and that means all the occupants—the staff, interns, and birds—are very busy!

It all starts with planning and preparation. The staff and interns work hard in the weeks leading up to breeding season building nest platforms, putting up nest boxes, and collecting various nesting materials that the birds can use to build their nests. Nest cameras are set up in breeding females’ aviaries so that nesting behavior can be observed around the clock.

Conserving Ursids: Giant Panda

Posted at 10:13 am May 8, 2008 by Suzanne Hall

giant pandaOf the eight living species of bears, the giant panda is the only one currently classified as endangered on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. This assessment is based on the estimation that less than 2,500 mature pandas live in the wild today, and this population is fractured into small groups of no more than 250 individuals apiece. Clearly, the most significant conservation threat to the panda is human encroachment: this results in less available habitat overall and fragmentation of remaining habitat.

Conserving Ursids: Sun Bears

Posted at 11:27 am May 7, 2008 by Suzanne Hall

sun bearAccording to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, the sun bear is a vulnerable species at high risk of extinction. Scientists are unclear as to how many of these small bears remain in the wild, since no reliable census data is available. However, like many endangered species, the sun bear’s habitat is subject to tremendous pressure and is disappearing at an alarming rate. This habitat destruction (a loss of thousands of square kilometers per year in Sumatra and Borneo alone) is one of the two primary conservation threats to the species.

Conserving Ursids: Andean (Spectacled) Bears

Posted at 11:19 am May 6, 2008 by Russ Van Horn

At the top of Bear Canyon at the San Diego Zoo, just above the two Transvaal lionesses (see blog, Golden Girls in Their Golden Years), live Tommy and Houdini, our two Andean bears. Depending on whom you talk to, these bears might also be called spectacled bears, osos andino, ucumaris, or one of several other names. I’ve been surprised that there are so many names for one species of bear!

Good To See You, Gao Gao!

Posted at 5:39 pm May 5, 2008 by Ellie Rosenbaum

As many of you sharp-eyed and diligent Cam-watchers have noticed, there have been some changes at the Giant Panda Research Station: Gao Gao and Su Lin have changed places. Gao has settled in nicely, after preliminary investigations, to the right-hand exhibit area and is, as usual, oblivious to everything except his bamboo. (Visitors? Narrators? What? Who?) Good ol’ Gao is quickly back to his easygoing eating/sleeping routine, such as it is, and visitors are pleased to see him again.

Conserving Ursids: Polar Bears

Posted at 8:53 pm May 4, 2008 by Megan Owen

polar bearsAny day of the week, you will find visitors to the San Diego Zoo at Polar Bear Plunge watching every move Kalluk, Chinook, or Tatqiq make. Sometimes it may be something as simple as a yawn, stretch, or roll during an afternoon nap. But other times, visitors are rapt with attention while watching our bears wrestle with each other underwater, play with any number of enrichment items, or making eye contact and interacting through the glass with them. There is just something about polar bears that captures the imagination and attention of people of all ages.

Ivan Giraffe: The Passing of a Legend

Posted at 3:43 pm May 1, 2008 by Lance Aubery

Ivan giraffeIn the short history of the Wild Animal Park, there are only a few animals that have achieved legendary status for both employees and guests alike. Ivan, the male reticulated giraffe, was one such animal. On April 29, 2008, Ivan passed away quietly in the Wild Animal Park’s South Africa exhibit. He was 19 years old.

Grizzly Paw Prints to be Auctioned!

Posted at 2:41 pm May 1, 2008 by Hali Anderson

Montana's paw printWe will be celebrating Bear Awareness Days at the San Diego Zoo May 8 through 11, 2008 (see blog about Bear Awareness Days). This is a wonderful opportunity for you to visit the five bear species we house at the Zoo and hopefully take home some knowledge of their importance to the planet and what can be done to help save them from extinction. Our goal is to raise awareness about the bears of the world and to raise money to send to several bear conservation groups. One of our fund-raising efforts comes in the form of an online auction, where you will be able to bid on some one-of-a-kind items courtesy of the bears and their creative caretakers!
