Many people ask me, “What do you feed the bears?” and “How do you keep polar bears in San Diego?” What they don’t realize is that the answers are closely related. Polar bears in the wild rely on the sea ice to hunt their main prey, ringed seals; because of this, their hunting season lasts only six to eight months each year. It’s the fat stores they build up from eating these seals that give them energy throughout the year.

A Gibbon Birthday Party

Posted at 11:00 am April 29, 2008 by Beth McDonald

gibbon partyOn April 4, we celebrated Bodhi’s 2nd birthday. Bodhi is one of four red-cheeked gibbons (formerly known as Gabriella’s crested gibbons) located in Sun Bear Forest at the San Diego Zoo. Bodhi, mom CJ, dad Max, and Aunt Gaby all had a great time at the party! There were boxes filled with hay and other goodies, which were Max’s favorites, along with a three-layer piñata cake.gibbon party

gibbon partyCJ carried around a party hat with a touch of honey on the inside. She collected the birthday cups, which we had filled with popcorn, while Gaby enjoyed the party-themed treat bags; she held them with her feet so she could pick through the shredded paper with her fingers to find the peanuts.

gibbon partyBirthday boy Bodhi was having a blast swinging from tree to tree, playing with all the party streamers. The celebration was not only enriching for the gibbon family, but for the keepers as well. We loved creating this very special day for them!

Brown Bear Welcomed

Posted at 11:46 am April 28, 2008 by Hali Anderson

BlackieApril 17 was an exciting day for the San Diego Zoo’s Bear Canyon staff as we welcomed back an old friend. This friend, a Manchurian brown bear named Blackie, lived at the Zoo from 1986 through 1997 and has spent the last 11 years on loan at another facility. Now he has returned to us and we are so excited to have him!

Posted at 9:38 am April 25, 2008 by Kym Nelson

5 cubsThings sure have changed for the keepers at Lion Camp at the Wild Animal Park over the past few months. With a pride of 10 lions, we certainly have our hands full! The cubs are now 5 ½ months old and all 7 are growing quickly and are demonstrating that they are all individuals with their own likes and dislikes.

Otter Pup Arrives

Posted at 2:01 pm April 24, 2008 by Hali Anderson

otter pupIf any of you have visited the San Diego Zoo this past month, you may have noticed that our Cape clawless otter pool in Bear Canyon is drained. Why? Because on March 8, 2008, we were thrilled to discover that our female, Sweet Otter, had given birth!

News from Panda Canyon

Posted at 10:03 am April 23, 2008 by Ellie Rosenbaum

The Spring Break crowds are pretty much behind us, and we’re settling into “field trip season” here at the San Diego Zoo. Everyone’s anxious to visit the pandas and see The Baby, but Zhen Zhen’s not always cooperating. Curling up in the gray-green hammock, even at 31 pounds (14 kilograms) she’s not yet large enough to be seen well over the hammock’s edge. That makes the hammock one of my least favorite of ZZ’s favorite napping spots.

New Cub Joins Lion Camp Pride

Posted at 2:28 pm April 22, 2008 by Amy Whidden Winter

lion cub nyackMany of you have waited to hear news of adult lions M’Bari and Etosha at the Wild Animal Park. These two lions do not live in Lion Camp, but in an off-exhibit area. On December 6, 2007, after a long, hard labor, Etosha delivered three cubs: the first was small but strong; sadly, the next two were stillborn.

Panda Cubs: Highly Motivated

Posted at 9:52 am April 11, 2008 by Suzanne Hall

Zhen_in_tree080321.jpgAs I ran out of my office this morning to attend to a few errands around the San Diego Zoo, I looked up in the trees at the panda exhibit and saw Zhen Zhen, happily scaling branches and playing with leaves above me. Yesterday, as I checked the queue to see how our bears were doing, Zhen was up in those trees, skirting around the obstacles she encountered and playfully enjoying her view of those below. As many of you panda watchers know, our cub spends a lot of her time above the ground, in places where neither the keepers nor her mother can get to her.

Love Lost at Polars?

Posted at 3:56 pm April 7, 2008 by Kelly Murphy

So things here at Polar Bear Plunge at the San Diego Zoo still seem to be at a stand still. We are continuing our management the same by rotating the different pairs of bears, but have not seen any further progression between Chinook and Kalluk. I’m not sure that we’ll hear the pitter patter of little paws after all.

Kilauea Volcano: A Rumbling Threat

Posted at 12:51 pm April 7, 2008 by Alan Lieberman

HalemaumauThe glow at night and the pillar of smoke have even the local villagers in Volcano Hawaii talking in loud voices in the local post office. Not more than two miles south of the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center on the Big Island of Hawaii sits the Kilauea Volcano and its smoking core, the Halemaumau Crater – fabled to be the home of the Pele, goddess of fire. Since early March of this year, the Halemaumau vent has been releasing ash, steam, and sulphur dioxide in a towering plume of smoke that can be seen for miles. Although we are used to the constant smell of “vog” (volcanic fog) here at the bird propagation center, this new eruption and constant volcanic belching is of some concern. Here’s more information from the National Park Service…
