Safe Journey, My Furry Friend

Posted at 10:38 am January 29, 2008 by Kelly Murphy

Kelly feeds MomI know it’s been a few months since I’ve written about the love of my life, momma Pallas’ cat (see blog, Pallas’ Cat: Crate Training 101). But in fairness, not much has changed. The crate training I was working on was a success, although I had to give the crate back, so it’s been awhile. She is still “enrichment challenged”: stares at me, avoids it while I’m watching. Yet always there are signs of having been explored when I come in the next day. We went through our usual winter weight gain (yes, we). So, that brought out that stubborn streak I love so much. For those of you who have cats, it’s tough to make them do something they don’t want to do, especially when food isn’t a motivation. Nonetheless, she continues to make me smile, and I can’t imagine my day without her being a part of it.

Understanding the Ursidae

Posted at 11:54 am January 28, 2008 by Suzanne Hall

Zhen and BaiOne of the major foci of the San Diego Zoo’s Giant Panda Conservation Unit is our bear maternal care study. This study seeks to characterize and better understand the early postpartum period in as many bear species as possible. Thus far, we have complete data sets on the denning phase of the giant panda and American black bear. We have some data on brown bears and sun bears and are actively seeking to collect more. But many of the more threatened bear species remain unrepresented in our study thus far.

Lion Cubs Debut

Posted at 1:53 pm January 25, 2008 by Marcia Redding

5 cubsFinally, the seven young cubs in the Lion Camp pride at the Wild Animal Park are old enough to explore the exhibit with their proud moms, Mina and Oshana! (See Marcia’s previous blog, Lion Cubs Named!) The two litters, born a few days apart in November 2007, are now coordinated enough to avoid the edge of the moated exhibit and to enjoy the many wonders to which they now have access. There are trees and rocks to climb, grass to roll in, and even their own Land Rover to play on, not to mention views of giraffes, rhinos, and assorted antelope species!

Here we are again! (See Tina’s previous blog, Where the Deer and the Antelope Play.) The calves in the nursery at the Wild Animal Park are growing up and most are soon to be weaned, which is always a fun endeavour. Nukie, the gerenuk, broke her leg. Now she has a cute, pink cast, complete with smiley faces. It is so her! The cast hasn’t dampened her spirits. She still prances around and is as funny as ever.

Love is all around the Plunge

Kalluk

All through Polar Bear Plunge, the smell of hormones is in the air. Well, I can’t smell them but Kalluk certainly can. We have officially reached the start of breeding season for our polar bears. As we approached the end of the year, Tatqiq was given a clean bill of health and seemed her usual self again (see Kelly’s blog, Patchwork Polar Bear). All three bears shared their first snow day together on December 1. In general, things seemed content and “normal.” Then, barely into the first week of January, things changed.

Chinook and Kalluk Chinook, left, and Kalluk

Many of you have asked questions like, “What time are the polar bears on exhibit?” and “Who were the two bears I saw on Polar Cam?” Here’s very general run down of what a keeper’s day at Polar Bear Plunge looks like that may help answer some of these questions.

Lion Cubs Named!

Posted at 12:10 pm January 17, 2008 by Marcia Redding

Finally, the seven young cubs from Lion Camp at the Wild Animal Park have names! (See Marcia’s previous blog, Lion Cubs Meet Lion Cubs.) It took a bit longer than expected to come up with perfect names, but we are all pleased with the results. I have also included the identifying shave marks that help us keep track of who is who.

grizzly bear brothers Scout, left, and Montana

It’s been over a month now since Bear Canyon at the San Diego Zoo welcomed the arrival of its latest residents: two roly-poly fuzzy balls of joy named Scout and Montana. I’m referring, of course, to our grizzly bear cubs that took up residency in the canyon on November 30, 2007. If you haven’t made it out to see these year-old brothers yet, I urge you to come and watch first hand the delightful antics of these playful cubs.

Zhen Breaks the “Glass Ceiling”

Posted at 11:09 am January 16, 2008 by Ellie Rosenbaum

Zhen Zhen 12-18-07It’s been such a privilege to be able to watch the growth and development of four giant panda cubs firsthand here at the San Diego Zoo. Each cub has exhibited its own personality, quirks, and distinctive “style,” and Zhen Zhen is no exception. While as a tiny cub she appeared interested in the vertical approach to climbing, she’s worked her way up to that current favorite napping spot and no further. She has three routes to get there, of varying difficulty, and getting down can still be a challenge for her, but all of these trails are more slanted than vertical. The idea of going still higher apparently intrigued her; she’d brace her paws on the tree trunk and gaze upward, flexing and reaching a tentative paw, but until yesterday, this seemed to be her limit.
