Excitement in Panda Land!

Posted at 4:22 pm April 5, 2007 by Ellie Rosenbaum

As you’re now aware, the panda keepers at the San Diego Zoo switched Bai Yun and Gao Gao into one another’s enclosures, so if the bear you think you are viewing doesn’t look quite the same, this could be the reason. The switch right now is mid-day Tuesday and Thursday. This allows each animal to investigate the scent remains of the previous occupant. Allowing the pandas to renew their acquaintance gradually, through smell, sound, and sight can facilitate a successful mating, and this rotation of bears is an important first step.

Preuss' guenonTwo CRES scientists based in San Diego, Fred Bercovitch (associate director of CRES and head of Behavioral Biology) and Matt Anderson (scientist in Behavioral Biology) recently visited our project in Cameroon for three weeks, specifically to investigate if it might be possible to record and understand the calls, or vocalizations, of the primates in the Ebo forest.

In Memory of Mandisa

Posted at 12:57 pm April 3, 2007 by Marcia Redding

Mandisa meets IzuLast July, Wild Animal Park lioness Mina gave birth to a litter of three: one female and two males. The little female, Mandisa, has always been a challenged animal. Half the weight of her male siblings, she held her own for awhile, but it became increasingly clear that she had severe health issues. We did everything possible to diagnose her problems and help her to thrive, but over the last few weeks her condition steadily deteriorated and she stopped eating. We are sad to announce that she was euthanized on March 27. (She is pictured above meeting father Izu for the first time.)

Kinah Moves Out

Installment #6
(Read Installment #5, Kinah Moves Up)

KinahThe final piece of the puzzle was to introduce the male, Toad, into the social circle with the ladies. Male swamp monkeys are powerful creatures and while no one really thought Toad would harm Bunzi or Kinah, there was some element of risk. On March 20, Toad was admitted into the yard as we looked on. He confidently entered the scene and checked out the situation, exhibiting an impressive display of male dignity. He made no overt moves towards little Kinah. After several minutes, Kinah’s curiosity got the better of her. She approached the stoic Toad with what we now recognize as her signature polite, but curious, manner. Neither animal was frightened or aggressive, nor was there much contact between the two. The rest of the day passed uneventfully as the animals adjusted to each other without incident.

Sven’s Breakthrough Moment

Part #3
(Read Part #2, Sven’s Training Continues)

Sven picks up paper towel holderTo move forward to the next big training step, I took Sven back into the locker room where he would have no outside distractions. I asked him to move his body to take the item from my hand and drop the paper towel holder into the gray tub. Again, with every new, large step, Sven would hesitate, but with verbal encouragement and loads of patience he would eventually figure out what I wanted from him. Once he was moving his body to wherever my hand was with the paper towel holder, he would have to move back to the tub to drop the item inside; sometimes it would bounce off the edge and land outside the tub, so I would clap a little and start again. If he made it inside the tub, I would bridge, clap very loudly, kiss him, and feed him instantly. We stayed at this stage for some time, as I wanted to make sure that he had a complete understanding that the same word “inside” now meant to let go of the item when it would fall into the tub. This meant he had to aim his drops, another huge step for this timid, beautiful, sensitive retriever.
