Adopt-An-Animal: Su Lin!

Posted at 9:23 am December 6, 2005 by Rachael Shay

Su Lin certificate Su Lin is here and she is sweet! Because of the numerous requests for Su Lin specifically, we are offering, for a limited time, the opportunity to sponsor our little panda cub through the San Diego Zoo’s Adopt-An-Animal program. She is only available for adoption during the month of December. We have created a special adoption certificate specific to Su Lin, with computer wallpaper and a screensaver featuring her first months of life. The adoption makes a great gift idea for the holidays. Proceeds for the program will go to purchase toys and treats for our panda friends and other animals living at the San Diego Zoo and the Wild Animal Park.

Rachael Shay is a special events coordinator for the Zoological Society of San Diego.

Welcome Back, Bai Yun!

Posted at 6:44 am December 6, 2005 by Suzanne Hall

Some of you astute Panda Cam watchers may have noticed something unusual yesterday morning. Mei Sheng suddenly appeared to have morphed into a larger bear, with slightly different features. No, we aren’t feeding our bears a special formula to make them bulk up for the winter… that was Bai Yun, enjoying a few hours out in Mei Sheng’s old exhibit!

Nene Breeding Season Begins Successfully

Posted at 10:52 am December 5, 2005 by Joshua Kramer

nene chick At the Maui Bird Conservation Center (MBCC) the air is filled with the patter of little webbed feet and shrill peeps from downy chicks only days old. The onset of winter means two things to biologists working on Maui: afternoon rain showers and goslings galore. This season is no different as the first goslings began hatching during the middle of a wet November, culminating with four goslings hatching on Thanksgiving Day. MBCC manages four nene breeding pairs. Their first clutches collectively produced 18 goslings from 18 fertile eggs–100% hatchability!

Soso’s Story

Posted at 8:37 am December 5, 2005 by Bethan Morgan

Drill Soso Today is Sunday, and I have just returned from the Limbe Wildlife Center (LWC) here in Cameroon. I am a postdoctoral fellow at the San Diego Zoo’s CRES working in the tropical rain forest studying the elusive drill monkey. Drills are the most endangered primate in Africa, and we know very little about their behavior, feeding habits, and status in the wild. So why did I go to the Wildlife Center? Because almost exactly a year ago, when I was on my way back from the forest, I stopped at a roadside stall to buy fruit. And there I found Soso - a tiny, 6-week old baby drill tied to a post with a piece of string and obviously in very bad condition.

Lion Cub’s First Photo Session

Posted at 1:02 pm December 2, 2005 by Tammy Spratt

Lion cub 12-2-05 The smallest lion at the Wild Animal Park had his first photo session today. I was lucky to be the photographer that got to take his photos! As I waited for his keeper to ready his bottle, he walked around his enclosure very ready to be fed. He made little lion sounds not unlike an overgrown house cat…sounds that resembled deep “meows” you might hear from your own cat. He made other sounds as well as he waited impatiently for his bottle. He spent time testing his teeth on his enclosure blankets and toys. When his bottle was ready, his keeper climbed into the enclosure and the videographer and I climbed in behind her.

Black and White and Pink All Over

Posted at 7:06 am December 2, 2005 by Suzanne Hall

Su Lin exam 16 Su Lin has a very thick, fuzzy coat of black and white fur to keep her warm. Some of you may have been lucky enough to see her when she is outside and visible on one of our color cameras. If so, you may have noticed a faint pink tinge to her coat. This is a trait she shares with her older siblings, and a phase all of Bai Yun’s cubs have gone through: being black and white and pink all over.

Tapir calf Keepers are pleased to welcome a new member to Tiger River! A Malayan tapir was born Sunday night (Nov. 27), and he appears to be healthy and doing well. The dam, Rose, is an experienced mother, and has been caring for her youngster off exhibit wonderfully for the past few days.
