Umngani
(oom-GAH-nee)
The Tough One
Umngani’s name means "friend" in English, but she has
to constantly assert herself with the others to keep her social rank
in the herd. Luckily for her, she has the longest tusks of the six females,
and knows how to use them! Keepers say she is one tough-minded elephant,
and isn’t afraid to stand up for herself around Mabu, the bull. Umngani gave birth to her first calf, Khosi, September 11, 2006.
