Room to Roam
The San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park is working to reintroduce endangered species into their native habitats, but it’s often not as easy as it may sound. Room to Roam is an off-the-beaten-path adventure that takes you behind the scenes to show you the detailed planning that goes into reintroducing a species into the wild. This small group tour (up to 10 guests) includes a guide and the luxury of traveling in a private cart to various behind-the-scenes locations at the Park.
You’ll learn first hand about our Condor Recovery Program and the whole condor-rearing process as you practice feeding and moving a “chick” using the same condor puppets our keepers use to raise condors. Discover the numerous steps we take to prepare these magnificent birds for release into wild sites in Baja California, Mexico.
The Room to Roam tour also takes you to meet the last truly wild horse up close; from a scenic vantage point we’ll coax Przewalski’s horses near with the lure of tasty carrots and share information about the Park’s involvement in helping this equine species recover. An up-close visit with yet another endangered species with a success story to share completes this unique behind-the-scenes adventure.
