An Exotic Sensory Experience
Upon entering the Park through the thatched entrance portal, designed after the ceremonial chamber of a Ugandan king, you’ll enter Nairobi Village, a bustling village of shops, restaurants, animal exhibits, and activity centers. The Conservation Carousel will take you on a spin aboard your favorite critter and Discovery Station provides a hands-on play area for the young set. Chat with Robert the Zebra, who lives in digital, animated form on a large screen where he can see the people who have come to visit. You’ll also find the Animal Care Center, where a variety of young or injured animals that need a little help might be staying for extra care, along with the Petting Kraal next door, where kids and kids at heart can give gentle antelope, sheep, and deer species a pat or scratch under the chin.
In the center of the village you’ll find Mombasa Lagoon, surrounded by paths, wooden walkways, and a simulation of a Congo fishing village. This peaceful and scenic watering hole is home to pelicans, storks, shoebills, and ducks, along with migratory bird visitors like herons and egrets. On one side of the lagoon, look for exhibits for ever-busy meerkats, jaunty red river hogs, and tiny royal antelope. On the other side of the lagoon, you’ll encounter the Bee-eater Aviary, home to beautiful little birds that capture flying insects like bees in midair, and just beyond them, the Gorilla Habitat, home to our troop of lowland gorillas going about their business of eating, playing, caring for their young—and people-watching! Nearby, you can stop in at Benbough Amphitheater to enjoy the Frequent Flyers bird show or the interactive Animal Safari Misadventure show.
As you stroll through Nairobi Village, keep your eyes open for casual encounters with some of our wildlife ambassadors in the Animal Encounters program, out for walks with their trainers. Check your map insert for locations and times for these engaging talks.
