Name our Panda Cub!
A male giant panda, born on August 5, 2009, needs a name, and we’d like to take suggestions from panda fans worldwide! Right now, our little guy is the picture of cuteness, but we’d like his name to be suitable for the strong adult male he’ll become. Name suggestions need to be in Chinese (Pinyin), have an English translation, and be symbolic in meaning.
The Panda Team will review the names submitted online, as well as those delivered to the Zoo’s Giant Panda Research Station, and will choose several names for the Chinese Wildlife Conservation Association to review. Once approved, the names will be posted on our Web site and on our Facebook page for a final vote by the global community.
The name that receives the most votes will be announced at a ceremony held at the San Diego Zoo on Tuesday, November 17, when the cub is 104 days old.
Here's some information about the cub to help with your suggestions:
- He weighs about 7.7 pounds (3.5 kilograms) and is 21.3 inches (52.4 centimeters) long
- His mother is Bai Yun (white cloud) and his father is Gao Gao (big big).
- He is the fifth panda born at the San Diego Zoo and the second male.
- He has one half sister, Hua Mei (China USA), one brother, Mei Sheng (born in the USA or beautiful life), and two sisters, Su Lin (a little bit of something very cute) and Zhen Zhen (precious).
We look forward to your name suggestions!
