The San Diego Zoo: Celebrating 90 years

Dear Zoo Friend:

Here's the latest news from the San Diego Zoo
and the Wild Animal Park, too!

snow leopardNew snow leopards
at the Zoo

Visitors to Cat Canyon might spot Everett, one of our two new snow leopards. He was born at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago and his potential exhibit-mate, Anna, comes to us from the Memphis Zoo. They met each other while in quarantine at our Zoo and became good friends there. However, Anna is still getting used to her new surroundings, so for now, only Everett can be seen by visitors. And for fans of Mei Xing, the Zoo's other snow leopard, she shares space with our Persian leopard, Tayma, and they alternate days on exhibit.

Attention all panda fans: This is the last week to adopt our one-year-old panda, Su Lin, through our Adopt-An-Animal program. Adoption packages are available from $35 up to $1,000, and all the proceeds go directly towards purchasing toys and treats for our animals.

Scouts at Cans for CrittersCans for Critters recycling drive
for Scouts

Sept. 5-Oct. 20

It's that time of year again when recycling, Scout troops, and the San Diego Zoo get together to form one of the greatest youth conservation awareness programs in the world. Last year, almost 300 Scout troops raised $36,697.98! This year we are hoping to raise $50,000 for the endangered species conservation work we do around the world.

To get your troop involved, register online now. There will be plenty of new and exciting prizes this year for our top can collectors. Let's make 2006 go out with a "Roar for Recycling" and endangered species conservation!

If you have a school group that might be interested in helping the San Diego Zoo save species through recycling, stay tuned for our spring Cans for Critters drive for schools.

Cheetah Run Safari at the Wild Animal Park

Our special Safari trucks transport small groups of spectators to a naturally rustic encampment where you'll stand just feet away from a sleek, lightning-quick cheetah whooshing by in hot pursuit of a mechanical lure. The 1½-hour experience includes up-close encounters with other African wildlife, light refreshments, and a souvenir photo of our cheetah.

Cheetah Run Safaris are available most Saturdays and Sundays. Space is limited. For information and reservations, please call (619) 718-3000, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
