On February 23, 2004, a male African elephant named Vus'Musi, was born at the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park. His was the first birth for the herd rescued from culling in 2003. On September 11, 2006, an female African elephant named Khosi was born; on March 11, 2007, a male named Punga was born at the Park, on September 19, 2007 a female named Kamile was born, and on November 28, 2007, a female was born to this growing herd!

The mothers were five of seven African elephants rescued by the Wild Animal Park in August 2003. The bull and six cows were slated to be culled in Swaziland’s national parks because of elephant overpopulation. A lack of space and long periods of drought created unsuitable habitat for a large elephant population in the small southern African country. Officials in Swaziland’s Big Game Parks felt they had two options: kill a number of their elephants or export them to a zoo willing to care for the pachyderms.

Watch the elephants live on Elephant Cam.
