Kid Territory:Recipes: Yummy Yak Yogurt

Mooooove on over dairy cows. The yak is the true king of the mountain in the cow family. Yaks live in the highest mountain range in the world, the Himalayas. This area is so remote that it is difficult for scientists to study the behaviors of its animal residents. One fact, however, is quite clear: the yak is very important for the local people. It carries supplies up and down the steep mountainsides. The yak also provides milk and wool.

How do yaks stay warm when living outside on the world’s highest mountains? The yak has created its own version of a central heating system. When its diet of Tibetan moss is digested in the yak’s stomach, it gets hot. The stomach acts like the animal’s own furnace!

Ingredients

Vanilla frozen yogurt

Green sugar sprinkles

Fill your bowl with a couple of big scoops of frozen yogurt. Using the backside of your spoon, mold your yogurt until it looks one of the mountains in the Himalayas! These are the tallest mountains in the world, and much of the area is covered with snow. After you have made your mountain, place green sugar sprinkles all over your mountainside (that’s the Tibetan moss), so the yaks can stay warm.

After you finish your treat, why not head outside for a game of "King of the Mountain" with your friends. The last yak on the mountain wins!
