Biomimicry, or bioinspiration, is a field of integrative study in which biological systems, processes, and elements are studied to draw analogies to be applied to human design challenges in a sustainable manner.
As demand for natural resources continues to increase, but supply remains fixed, there is a growing cost to companies, consumers, and the environment. If we want to survive and thrive in the next century, we must learn to design new products, systems, and processes that are more efficient and environmentally sustainable.
Biomimicry is a interdisciplinary approach to problem solving in which biologists, engineers, chemists, business leaders, and more combine their expertise with the knowledge put forth by nature’s evolutionarily refined elements to progress the fields of technology, transportation, renewable energy, and beyond. With millions of extant species and billions of creative human minds, the possibilities are endless.
San Diego Zoo Global has one of the largest plant and animal collections in the world, a multidisciplinary set of scientific and behavioral experts, and world-class facilities to help unlock nature’s secrets and solve real-world problems with answers inspired by adaptations found in nature. The vision of our organization is to connect people to wildlife and conservation. Our vision for biomimicry is to increase awareness of bio-inspired design locally, nationally, and globally so that industries and the environment are no longer separate entities working against each other but a cohesive unit working toward building a more efficient and sustainable future.
San Diego Zoo Global has partnered with the City of San Diego and the four local universities to become the world’s first biomimicry hub. Collectively, we aim to develop San Diego into a leading center fostering biomimicry as a new paradigm for nature-inspired research, education, innovation, and investment.
