The recipe for this year’s signature fund-raising gala, Rendezvous In The Zoo (R*I*T*Z) at the San Diego Zoo, is a dollop of turn-of-the-century elegance blended with a hint of adventure and mixed with large amounts of wonderful food and fun. The Zoo’s upscale, black-tie event, this year called “Silver Safari: A Sophisticated Adventure,” will celebrate the 25th anniversary of R*I*T*Z, which has raised more than $8.2 million for Zoo and Wild Animal Park projects since it began in 1984.
The 2008 soiree under the stars takes place on Saturday, June 21, 2008 from 6:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Highlights include lavish hors d’oeures, hosted cocktails, a silent auction, a gourmet dinner, dancing, fabulous entertainment, and some surprises.
The event’s three energetic chairs—Stephanie McGuire, Janet Traver, and Caroline Wohl—along with their committee of more than 90 volunteers, are planning a party reminiscent of the “Out of Africa” mystique and grandeur. From silver candelabras to luxurious safari tents to an abundance of animal ambassadors, Silver Safari will create an anniversary affair that will be an unforgettable evening of dining and dancing, while recognizing and honoring the successes of the past R*I*T*Z chairs.
Tickets are $450 per guest for general seating and $900 per guest for R*I*T*Z Circle preferred seating. Proceeds from Silver Safari will benefit small mammal and bird habitats planned for the Zoo’s new Elephant Odyssey exhibit. Residents of these new animal environments will include guanacos, capybaras, tapirs, California condors, and secretary birds.
