Pine: Coulter's or Bigcone Pine Pinus coulteri

FAMILY: PINACEAE (Pine Family)

Coulter's pine Pinus coulteri is also known as the bigcone pine, because its cones can be 14 inches (36 centimeters) long and weigh up to 4 pounds (1.8 kilograms). It is also a fast grower that can reach heights of 90 feet (27 meters). This species is native to California and Baja California, Mexico, where it makes its living on dry, rocky slopes and chaparral. One grove can be seen in Cuyamaca State Park in San Diego County.
