You might mistake it for a huge clump of grass, but the grass tree Xanthorrhea quadrangulata really is a tree, with a thick black trunk topped with a fountain of grass-like leaves. This hardy Aussie native is tough enough to survive bush fires, and its spikes of hundreds of cream-colored flowers are a sought-after delicacy for nectar-eating birds.
