Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis
FAMILY: LAMIACEAE (Mint Family)
Rosemary is a hardy and drought-resistant plant in Southern California. There are many varieties, and they all enhance the landscape. It is said that to remain forever young, inhale the fragrance of rosemary every day! Recent scientific studies have found that rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis is an effective memory stimulant. (A small rosemary plant on your desk at work might be worth a try!) Tests have also shown that rosemary may have anti-cancer properties, and that it can work as a muscle relaxant.
Rosemary is also popular among some of our animal residents. It is often offered as enrichment for some of our large cats, to be enjoyed like catnip.
The Herb Garden at the Safari Park has several cultivars, including 'Escondido' and 'San Pasqual,' both of which were discovered on the Safari Park grounds.
