Fountain Grass: Red Fountain Grass Pennisetum setaceum
FAMILY: POACEAE (Grass Family)
Red fountain grass Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum' has become a popular landscaping element in Southern California, especially since it is drought and heat resistant. Yet the fountain grass genus hails originally from Africa, southwestern Asia, and Arabia. Its common name refers to the fountain of flower stalks that cascade from the foliage, and its genus name comes from the Latin words penna and seta, meaning "feather bristle." The rich burgundy leaves and stalks of the 'Rubrum' cultivar make it a real show-stopper.
