Strawberry Tree Arbutus unedo

The fleshy fruit of the strawberry tree Arbutus unedo may look a bit like a strawberry, but it is mealy and tasteless. That's probably the reason for its species name, unedo, which means "I eat only one," suggesting that you wouldn't want to eat a second fruit after tasting the first. Some claim that if you pare off the fruit's gritty skin and sample the inside, it has a delicate, pleasant flavor. But the rest of us agree with its Latin name and enjoy the tree's fruit visually rather than gastronomically.
