Cypress: North African Cypress Cupressus dupreziana
FAMILY: CUPRESSACEAE (Cypress Family)
The Safari Park's rare North African cypress Cupressus dupreziana (pictured on right) towers against the sky. The North African cypress is found in the wild only in Algeria, on the Edeni plateau of the central Sahara. It is one of the most drought-tolerant and frost-resistant conifers known, and yet it is critically endangered, exploited for centuries for its wood. However, efforts began in 1987 to sustain and reintroduce this beautiful cypress in its native habitat.
