Horsetail Tree Casuarina equisetifolia
FAMILY: CASUARINACEAE (She-oak Family)
The horsetail tree Casuarina equisetifolia is a tall, slender tree native to Australia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. It is often found along coastlines, where its deep green, feathery branches dip and sway in the sea breezes. What appear to be the leaves, looking much like the needles on conifers, are actually small, modified branches from which the tree gets its common and species names. The branches are whorled and scaly, like the horsetail reed Equisetum sp.
