Plants: Species

Papaya Carica papaya

If you've eaten a papaya that tasted bland and squash-like, you probably got one that was grown in California. Our nights are a bit too cool to permit the fruits to ripen properly, and as a result the fruit lacks the sugar content and flavor of tropically grown papayas. While the San Diego Zoo's Carica papaya grows well in spite of our cool nights and certainly looks delectable in our Tropical Fruit Grove, its flavor just doesn't hold up to the Hawaiian imports.
