Palm: Fishtail Palm Caryota gigas
FAMILY: ARECACEAE (Palm Family)
Many palms are much too large for an average garden. The most impressive specimen in the Zoo's collection is the fishtail palm Caryota gigas growing next to the hornbill enclosure between the Canyon Cafe and Hunte Amphitheater. The species name gigas means gigantic--and it certainly is! This species can reach 100 feet (30 meters) tall, and the fronds are up to 20 feet (6 meters) long and 10 feet (3 meters) wide. A single tree would completely fill an average yard.
The Zoo and Wild Animal Park, like other botanic gardens, give guests the chance to enjoy and admire such plants without having to sacrifice their entire living space!
