- San Diego Zoo
Palm: Royal Palm Roystonea regia
FAMILY: ARECACEAE (Palm Family)
A palm too big for most private gardens is the royal palm Roystonea regia. A group of them can be found in the raised planters at the Zoo's exit.
Native to South America, these palms live up to their "princely" history in the wild, towering well over 100 feet (30 meters) tall. The trunks can be 2 feet (61 centimeters) in diameter, and the crown itself can be 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall. However, those dimensions are never reached in San Diego's drier climate.
