Cactus: Hedgehog Cactus Echinocereus engelmannii

The hedgehog cactus Echinocereus engelmannii has long, long spines. Its species name honors George Engelmann, a German-born physician who moved to Missouri and managed to become an expert in cacti and oaks. Like the beaver-tail cactus, the hedgehog cactus has magenta flowers and edible fruit.
