Plants: Species

Mauritius Hemp Furcraea foetida 'Mediopicta'

A member of the Agave family, Furcraea foetida 'Mediopicta' stands out against a colorful background with its variegated leaf patterns.

Genetic mutations cause the most dramatic changes in the widest range of plants by hampering their ability to produce chlorophyll, which is responsible for the green color that we find in all plants. It is also needed for photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert the energy of the sun into growing power. A white edge or stripe on a leaf is basically an area that lacks chlorophyll.
