Coral Tree (Erythrina): Natal or Dwarf Coral Tree Erythrina humeana

FAMILY: FABACEAE (Bean Family)

The natal or dwarf coral, native to South Africa, is a small tree (15 to 20 feet high) with short, pointed leaflets and red blooms in the summer. The bark and roots of this species have been used medicinally, mainly for respiratory infections. You'll find this tree in the Zoo's Kopje exhibit.
