Plants: Species

Sugarcane Saccharum officinarum

FAMILY: POACEAE (Grass Family)

Yo ho ho and a bottle of...sugarcane? Sugarcane transported from its home in the South Pacific to the Caribbean in the late 15th century led to the production of molasses, which later was distilled into rum. Native to tropical Asia and Polynesia, sugarcane is still the main source of the world's sugar and its foliage provides fodder for cattle.

This tasty member of the grass family is a favorite treat for some of our Zoo animals to munch on, including giant pandas and sun bears.
