Plants: Species
Chilean Rhubarb, Dinosaur Food Gunnera tinctoria
FAMILY: GUNNERACEAE (Gunnera Family)
One of the most common names for this plant is "dinosaur food." It may have gotten that name because the gigantic, hairy leaves (4 to 8 feet, or 1.2 to 2.4 meters, across), have a leathery look like lettuce left in the fridge too long. It truly looks like something plant-eating dinos may have munched on! The dinosaur food plant likes the sun, and during the wintertime the large leaves shrivel up.
