Fig (Ficus): Moreton Bay Fig Ficus macrophylla

Aerial roots that resemble pillars support the massive limbs of this Moreton Bay fig Ficus macrophylla in Flamingo Lagoon. With all of its spreading limbs and support roots, a single tree can cover a whole acre in its native Australian habitat. The San Diego Zoo's fig collection includes some of the Zoo's oldest and largest trees. One of our Moreton Bay figs has a trunk circumference of more than 38 feet (11.5 meters)!
