Palm: Cuban Royal Roystonea regia

FAMILY: ARECACEAE (Palm Family)

At first glance, you might mistake the Cuban royal palms Roystonea regia, near the San Diego Zoo's Wegeforth Bowl, for large concrete columns etched with horizontal segments. A quick look up, however, reveals that the columns are the trunks of huge and magnificent palms, and the rings are leaf-base scars.
