- San Diego Zoo
Bauhinia, Orchid Tree Bauhinia sp.
FAMILY: FABACEAE (Bean Family)
Bauhinias are often called orchid trees, because a number of their 300 species of trees, shrubs, and vines have blooms that look like orchids. They are not orchids, however, but legumes, and can be found in many of the world's tropics. The San Diego Zoo has bauhinias gracing its entrance, the Hummingbird House, the Kopje exhibit (such as this red bauhinia Bauhinia punctata), Tiger River, and other places, and one species or another is usually in bloom throughout the year.
