Plants: Species

Bottlebrush Callistemon sp.

It's easy to see where the common name for the bottlebrush plants comes from: the flowers really do look like bottle brushes that have been dipped in crimson dye. Although they originally hail from the hummingbird-less land of Australia, bottlebrushes have not only adapted well to Southern California's similar climes, they've become a favorite nectar source for our local hummers. The San Diego Zoo has a number of bottlebrush species in Wings of Australasia and the Lory Loop, including this Callistemon viminalis.
