Plants: Species

Aloe: Aloe Vera Aloe barbadensis

FAMILY: LILIACEAE (Lily Family)

Aloe has long been used for purgatives and skin care, and to treat sunburn and burns. If you decide to break off the tip of an aloe leaf to sooth your sunburn, however, be sure it's a species such as aloe vera Aloe barbadensis or the ferox aloes (which are both a source of the drug aloe), and not one of the aloes that is toxic! And, of course, if the plant is at the San Diego Zoo or the Wild Animal Park, don't break it off at all. The Park and Zoo plants are off limits for obvious reasons: if every visitor broke off pieces that caught their fancy, most of our plants would have died long ago.
