Giant Bird-of-paradise Strelitzia nicolai
FAMILY: STRELITZIACEAE (Crane Flower Family)
It's a little confusing: whenever someone wants to know where to find birds of paradise, we have to ask, "Do you mean the plants or the birds?" They're not in the same place and there's a good reason. Bird-of-paradise plants are fairly widespread throught the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park and especially common in areas with African animals. That's because bird-of-paradise plants hail from Africa. The avian birds of paradise, however, make their home in the Zoo's Wings of Australasia exhibit, because that's where they're from!
You can see giant birds-of-paradise Strelitzia nicolai (pictured) with their striking black-and-white blooms throught the Zoo, including Elephant Odyssey and outside the Terrace Lagoon.
