Cup-of-gold Vine, Chalice Vine Solandra maxima
FAMILY: SOLANACEAE (Potato Family)
Just beyond Elephant Mesa at the San Diego Zoo by the camels, you'll see a beautiful veil of vines. With its large, glossy, evergreen leaves and striking springtime blooms, the Solandra maxima makes a spectacular natural wall hanging for fences or trellises that get sunlight. The Mexican vine's showy flowers are fragrant at night, and are responsible for both of its common names: cup-of-gold vine and chalice vine. It can also be found in the Zoo's Childrens' Zoo and along Horn & Hoof Mesa.
