Plants: Species

Butterwort Pinguicula sp.

FAMILY: Lentibulariaceae

Butterworts have tiny glands on their surface that secrete a sticky nectar. Once a gnat or other small insect gets stuck, its struggles activate the sessile glands beneath the insect, which produce digestive acids and enzymes which dissolve the insect. The butterwort then absorbs the nutrient-rich fluid.
