Queensland Umbrella Tree or Octopus Tree Brassaia actinophylla
FAMILY: ARALIACEAE (Ginseng Family)
The large, overlapping leaves of the Queensland umbrella tree Brassaia actinophylla make good shelter in a rainstorm. It's also called the octopus tree, and the reason for that is only clear when the tree flowers. Long spikes appear from the top of the tree, as if it were growing a top-knot, and reach out like the arms of an octopus in a spray of bright red flowers.
