Cape Chestnut Calodendrum capense
FAMILY: RUTACEAE (Rue Family)
Calodendrum capense translates as "beautiful tree of the Cape," an apt name for this beautiful South African tree, especially in the late spring and early summer when it produces copious clusters of sweet-smelling, pale-pink flowers. The tree's common name, however, is not so apt. Known as a Cape chestnut, the plant is not a chestnut at all. It's in the rue family, which also includes citrus trees, rather than the beech family, which includes true chestnuts.
