Spider Flowers Grevillea
FAMILY: PROTEACEAE (Protea Family)
If you had to guess which of the various shrubs from Down Under that line the planters around the koalas, wallabies, tree kangaroos, and Sydney's Grill at the San Diego Zoo were Grevillea species, you'd be hard-pressed to tell from the leaves. Grevillea leaves vary radically, from lacy fronds to more substantial fern-like leaves to traditional leaves. When the rare plants are in bloom, however, it's much clearer which ones are the Grevilleas . All their blossoms look very similar and give the Grevilleas their common name: spider flowers.
